Aquarama Exhibition by Dr. Hameed Al-Alawi
I have been attending Aquarama’s exhibition since its inception in 1989, when I was invited by Sri Lanka’s legendary fish collector, Rodney Jonklaas, who pioneered the popularisation of Sri Lankan ornamental fish worldwide. Rodney was a renaissance man, a fine diver, underwater photographer, and well respected aquarist in the industry. Two species of freshwater have been named after him, namely “Lepidocephalichthys jonklaasi”, and “Sicyopus jonklaasi”. It is only right that I look at the past history, it has been said that no one can change the past! Most of my aquatic friends and business associates' whom I am still in contact and working with, have met in Aquarama Singapore over the years.
Since its first exhibition Aquarama has maintained its uniqueness for being, the major international event in the aquatic sector, that is dedicated to the ornamental fish and its related accessories and no other pets. It is held biennially in Singapore, and offers boundless business opportunities for the ornamental fish sectors. Industry representatives from all over the world choose Aquarama as their definitive meeting place and channel for growing their business opportunities, sourcing new products, meeting with business associates, visiting fish farms, attending seminars and interesting lectures that are held daily and delivered by well-known fish experts from all over the world, or simply learning of the latest aquarium technology and developments. You will find everything you need and to do with aquarium business, under one roof.
Aquarama has incorporated tropical fish competitions for discus, arowanas, goldfish, betas, and guppies, it launched with resounding success in 2005 a competition for marine aquarium tanks, and in 2007 a competition for planted aquariums with some spectacular displays. I was honoured by an invitation from the organiser to be a judge for marine competition for the year 2007; I accepted the opportunity without hesitation, since Singapore has always been one of my favourite destinations because there is so much to do! There are plenty of fish farms and exporters to visit, great seafood, and unsurpassed hospitality from colleagues and business associates.
Most if not all of the marine aquarium competition tanks had some beautiful reef aquascape's setups on display, which housed lots of live rocks, stunning hard and soft corals artistically arranged with some colourful marine fish to represent a balanced ecosystem. Since its launch, the marine aquarium competition has increased in popularity and added another standard to this unique aquatic event. The marine aquarium displays have also notably improved over the years, with the increased knowledge of the aquarists, more availability of quality species and variety of both, fish corals to display.
2013, Aquarama has marked another successful event by launching marine nano tank competition, reflecting the growing interest and popularity among hobbyist in recent years.
Aquarama has recently announced a move intended to foster closer ties between industry members and those in public aquaria. The press release explained that the upcoming trade show will include members of the zoo and public aquarium community, which includes devoting a large portion of the speaker schedule to topics relevant to breeding, conversation, fish husbandry, legislation, CITES and marketing, plus several other topics which are currently being finalised.
In addition to these seminars, the event will feature a round table discussion on the topic of "Maximising the Synergies of the Public and Home Aquarium Industries" as well as a facilitated strategic development meeting "to explore ways in which both industries can help drive environmental and socioeconomic benefits."
